What is BTech Polymer Engineering?

The stream of engineering that is connected to the theories of chemical engineering and is a field that dabbles in the design, analysis and modification of polymer materials is referred to as Polymer Engineering.

  • This is the stream of engineering that deals with the principles of plant and process design, thermodynamics and other transport phenomena in order to understand the theoretical and practical processes involved in the formulation and application of polymers.
  • There is a minor exception to the duration of the course, in that it may be successfully completed in 3 years in universities such as the College of Engineering Roorkee and Maharashtra Institute of Technology where lateral entries of candidates are permitted.
  • While the 1st year’s subjects are mutual across all disciplines of engineering under the BTech umbrella, the second year enters a few specific subjects catering to polymer engineering.
  • The third-year focuses on a primarily specialization centric approach, and finally, the fourth year requires the candidate to engage in industrial training and practical projects.
  • Overall, the course’s aim is to inculcate in students the ability to harness their skills in a manner that allows them to adopt a creative perspective in order to facilitate efficiency in the production process of polymers and related plasticine products.
  • The average annual tuition fee for BTech Polymer Engineering lies between INR 2 lakhs and INR 5 lakhs and varies from university to university.

Why Study BTech Polymer Engineering?

  • As a branch of engineering, it tackles all varieties of polymers, which are inclusive of plastics, adhesives, rubbers, resins and fibres.
  • Students who graduate with a degree in Polymer Engineering are eligible to seek jobs in the polymer manufacturing and consumption industries in the roles of quality control inspectors, production planners and production supervisors.
  • Graduates of this particular course have promising careers in both the private and public sectors.
  • As for the latter, there are plenty of vacancies for BTech Polymer Engineering graduates in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Oil and Natural Gas Commissions, the Petroleum Conservation Research Association of India among other government agencies.
  • Other than that, graduates, upon acquiring the necessary degrees, such as an MTech or an ME, can also join Universities as part of their teaching staff, either in the capacity of a professor or a part-time lecturer. Additionally, they also become eligible for applying for research grants in order to conduct research both in and out of campus, in their independent research laboratories.

Polymer Engineering Admission Process

In order to be eligible for participating in the eligibility process, students need to have secured a minimum aggregate score of 55% in their 10+2 level examination from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as their core subjects. Alternatively, students with an aggregate score of 50% but with a diploma course spanning over 1 year are also eligible to apply for the course. There are two modes for application, namely either through merit or through performance in an entrance examination.

Merit-Based

  • Typically, students can avail the application forms for this mode of admission both through the official online portals of these colleges or through offline means.
  • In this mode of admission, often referred to as the “Direct Mode” of Admission, Universities release merit lists consisting of names of the shortlisted students based solely on their academic performance at the 10+2 level. This is done on a cut-off basis, wherein students who score the same as or above the cut-off score are granted admission into the specific college.
  • Upon seeing their name on the merit list, interested candidates can then reach out to the authorities and confirm the steps and dates of the document verification process and then make a payment in order to book their seat for the incoming academic session.

Entrance Based

  • Candidates are required to register for these entrance examinations by creating an account for themselves, verifying their phone numbers, e-mail addresses and so on.
  • Upon filling out the form with accurate information, and uploading scanned versions of all the necessary documents such as birth certificates, 10th and 12th-grade mark sheets and passport size photographs in the required format, they will be needed to pay an application fee via a number of online payment gateways, which vary from college to college.
  • Once all candidates have been marked as eligible, the admission departments of the colleges will proceed to release admit cards, which are a form of identification necessary while appearing for the examination.
  • Upon the release of results, which comprises a list of percentile scores, qualifying candidates are allotted specific dates when they are called in for counselling sessions in order to select which branch of BTech they want to pursue (in this case, Polymer Engineering).

?How to get Admission to a Good College?

  • Conducting thorough research into the crucial details such as course curriculums, eligibility criteria, admission procedures, course fees helps.
  • Candidates who are looking to secure admission through Merit are advised to ensure they keep their aggregate scores in the 10+2 examinations high because cutoffs are typically competitive in nature.
  • Most commonly, it is observed that in order to secure admission in a top university for BTech Polymer Engineering, one must be well versed with all the skills necessary for a standard BTech Entrance Examination and Personal Interviews, as the ranks acquired in each of these rounds play a large role in the shortlisting of candidates.
  • Special care must also be taken to fill out all the necessary details correctly, keeping in mind the list of instructions that are shared specific to each entrance examination.

How to Prepare for the Entrance Examinations?

In order to secure admission into a top college for BTech Polymer Engineering, students are often required to clear Entrance Examinations, in which they have to acquire a competitive rank. Some useful tips to keep in mind while preparing areas are listed below:

  • Having a clear understanding of what the exam pattern is will always help. To make things easier, most BTech Entrance Exams have 3 sections of questions, namely General Aptitude, Engineering and Mathematics - all of which are subjects students have in school, at the 10+2 level.
  • Students must attempt to answer all questions since there is typically a complete absence of negative marking.
  • Solving question papers from previous years will not only help candidates familiarise themselves with the concepts in the syllabus but will also lend a certain amount of confidence because they will be able to tell where their weaknesses lie. Solving anywhere between 20 and 30 mock papers should set students up to a considerable degree.
  • Time management is a skill as crucial as the preparation of the main syllabus. Allocating fixed amounts of time to each section, and taking care not to overshoot any of these self-set periods will ensure fewer debacles, in terms of running out of time.
  • Using self-help books such as Fundamentals of Polymer Engineering by Anil Kumar and Thermoplastic Foam Extrusion: An Introduction by James L, Throne may be helpful. Alternatively, students may also consider joining a Coaching Centre during the period they are setting aside for preparation.
